Four Italian hospitals treat cancer patients with BSD's microwave ablation system

Four hospitals in Italy have treated cancer patients using the new MicroThermX microwave ablation system from BSD Medical Corporation.

The MTX-180 is a compact mobile system that includes a microwave generator, single-patient-use disposable antennas, and a thermistor-based temperature monitoring system.

It uses synchronous phased array technology developed and patented by BSD to provide larger and more uniform zones of ablation during a single procedure.

Med-Italia Biomedica, a distributor of interventional radiology/oncology products purchased the MicroThermX system and co-ordinated the delivery of the treatments.

The four participating hospitals were: Ospedaliera Spedali Civili in Brescia in Northern Italy; Istituto Clinico Humanitas in Rozzano, a teaching center for the University of Milan’s International Medical School; Instituto Europeo Di Oncologia in Milano, a leading cancer treatment hospital; and Ospedale di San Giovanni Battista in Torino, the oldest hospital in Torino and the largest hospital in Piedmont.
