Smiths Medical to supply temperature management products to US healthcare alliance

Carlsbad, Calif. USA. Smiths Medical, part of the global engineering business of UK-based Smiths Group, has been awarded participation in a multi-million dollar contract with Premier Purchasing Partners group purchasing organization (GPO).

This three-year contract, effective from 1 August 2006 to 31 July 2009, represents Premier's renewed commitment to purchase devices from Smiths Medical's Temperature Management product portfolio. This award positions Smiths Medical as a full line provider of patient warming products for the approximately 1500 acute care facilities that encompass this GPO's membership.

Premier Purchasing Partners is a healthcare alliance entirely owned by more than 200 of the USA's leading not-for-profit hospitals and healthcare systems. These organizations operate or are affiliated with nearly 1,500 hospitals and more than 38,500 other healthcare sites. Premier Purchasing Partners provides an array of services supporting health services delivery including group purchasing totalling more than $25 billion annually in supplies and equipment purchasing, as well as supply chain and clinical performance improvement services.

The Smiths Medical temperature management products include both convective and fluid warming products. One of Smiths Medical's products, Level 1, offers an effective system for keeping patients warm during high-volume surgical irrigation — the Level 1 NormoFlo Irrigation Fluid Warmer System. Their convective warming products feature the complete SnuggleWarm Blankets, a standard line of products in many acute settings, which provide warm air, are easy to manipulate and are available in multiple configurations for all clinical applications.

"Premier members will benefit from access to Smiths Medical's industry-leading fluid and convective warming products. Smiths Medical's quality temperature management product portfolio is designed to enhance patient outcomes while advancing the quality of care provided," said Steve Glover, Vice President of Corporate Accounts at Smiths Medical. "These contracts represent a tremendous opportunity for Smiths Medical to increase its presence within Premier's membership."
